Dane’s Five Month Update
Today I’m sharing Dane’s 5 Month Update!
Dane is 5 months old! I remember when he was a tiny newborn thinking to myself, I wonder what he will be like around 5-6 months. This age is my favorite so far! I have probably said it before, but I feel like the older he gets, the more fun it gets! He gets more interactive, playful, and is able to be apart of the family more. It is so sweet seeing Kennedy and him interact together too. I’m so grateful Kennedy has been the sweetest big sister and always loves on him. She likes to help me wake him up in the morning or get him ready to go out. She also will entertain him while I’m trying to make dinner or do things which is so sweet. I hope they will grow up to be best friends and always be there for each other. As you can tell from the pictures above, his newest trick is sticking out his tongue. We usually laugh and then laughs as well! I can tell he is already trying to be silly with us!
This month Dane has been rolling all over on his playmat and has started to push up on his hands during tummy time. He went through a phase this month where he started to hate tummy time (it was the worst), but ever since I got him this play mat he loves it again. I was just using a blanket before and he didn’t seem to like it anymore. I love this playmat because it is easy to clean/sanitize, wipe up spit ups, and he is also able to spin around and get to all his toys. His newest thing is spinning to get to his toys. I will place them all around him, so when he gets bored with one, he will try to find another toy to play with. I will share below all the toys he has been loving lately!
Dane’s 5 Month Schedule:
7:30 AM- wake/feed time (4-6 ounces of milk)
8:00-9:15 AM- playtime
9:15 AM- begin naptime routine/ quiet time in the room, sing song, read a book, etc.
9:15/9:30 AM- Nap #1
11:00 AM- wake/feed (4-6 ounces)
11:30-1:15 PM- playtime
1:15 PM- begin naptime routine
1:15/1:30 PM- Nap #2
2:30 PM- wake/feed (4-6 ounces)
4:00 PM – Nap #3 (wake-up by 5pm)
5pm- wake/feed (4-6 ounces)
6:30 PM- start bedtime routine – bath, bottle (6-8 ounces), book/song
7:00 PM- down for the night drowsy, but awake
One thing I want to note is I don’t go exactly by the times above. I go mainly by wake times! If he wakes up earlier in the day or has a short nap, I adjust as needed. I try to pay attention to wake times to make sure Dane doesn’t get overtired and is able to go down for a nap better.
Currently Loving:
I have been currently loving the Beaba Babycook to make Dane’s baby food. It is actually fun and something I enjoy doing! It is easy to use and it cooks and steams any fruit, vegetable, even poultry with one click. Then I can puree it and blend it after too. I have these silicone baby food storage containers. You can make large batches and freeze them. As well as make small batches at a time and keep them in the fridge for throughout the week. He has been teething and drooling a TON, so I make sure to always have these cute banana bibs handy to save his outfits!
Dane loves this playmat and some new toys I got him. He loves these two toys (here and here) the best because he can easily grab them and they rattle too. He also is still obsessed with his Skiphop exerciser and his ocean discovery jumper!
Last week I got him this new sleep sac and it is actually amazing. I read all the reviews on Amazon and heard such great things about it regulating baby’s body temperature. But I was skeptical because of the price. But Dane sleeps great in it and it’s worth every penny. It is made out of real Australian merino wool so it regulates baby’s body temperature during all four seasons. It keeps them warm when it is cold, and keeps them cool when it’s hot! I got him the universal size, so he can wear it up to 24 months! He also loves these lovies he sleeps with at night.
If he wakes up from a nap or in the night, he will grab his loveys and it helps him fall backasleep. There are the two ones I have for him. This small blanket and his elephant!
This Month’s Highs:
The past few days Dane has been so happy and loving! He loves cuddling and snuggling his face into my neck. He can lay there and let me hold him forever! I love how he is babbling more now and he just started this loud and long “ahhhhh” sound. We call it his terodacktle noise! I think he just loves hearing his voice and all the noise he can make now! He started eating a few purees this month which is new and exciting for him. So far he has tried prunes, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, bananas, pears and oatmeal. Knock on wood, he has like all of them so far. I usually will mix in the fruits with his oatmeal for breakfast.
He is back to sleeping through the night again and napping good, which I’m so grateful for! I got some great tips from my sleep consultant Jess, who got me through that rough week when Dane was sick. I will be sharing some of the tips she gave me below. Dane has been able to sit up in the toddler seat of the UPPAbaby stroller, so I’ve enjoyed taking him out on walks during the day. He loves looking around and being outside. If he is being fussy at home, I just take him outside on a walk or change up the scenery, and it always seems to calm him down. I feel like we are in a consistent routine now as a family, with Dane on his schedule and Kennedy going to preschool. It is nice having everything going smoothly and having the kids on a good schedule!
This Month’s Lows:
Dane was super fussy and cried every time I laid him down for a few days. I never even thought that it could possibly be an ear infection. I was on the phone with my sister and I was telling her what had been going on, and she said her baby boy Hayden was doing the same thing, and he has an ear infection. So I made Dane an appointment and took him in to see a doctor right away.
Turns out he did have a really bad ear infection. Kennedy has never had an ear infection before, thankfully, so I didn’t know some of the signs of having one. We all got sick and caught colds that week, so I think that is how he got it. But he is doing much better now, and back to his normal happy self! It is seriously the worst seeing our little ones sick and miserable.
NOTES FOR 5-MONTH OLDS:
Dane’s sleep consultant, Jessica Hudson from The Sleep Shop, has helped so much getting Dane into good sleep habits. She is always there for me with great advice and tips day and night! I asked her to share some tips and sample schedules for you mamas who have babies Dane’s age! Over on my Instagram (@katelynpjones), you can also ask any sleep questions, and she will answer them all in the comments! Just find the most recent 5 month photo of Dane to post your question.
Five months can be the sweetest age, but also a tricky one. You’ve likely just experienced the 4-
month sleep regression, baby is more alert, and teeth are starting to come in. This is why it’s an
especially crucial time to have great sleep habits and a regular routine.
The average 5-month-old needs 3.5-4 hours of daytime sleep and can be awake for up to 2.25
hours at a time. I have found that while this is the average, it’s an age where there is an especially
large variation in sleep needs. Watch for baby’s sleep cues to find the right window – you don’t
want them going down overly tired or after not enough time awake. At 5 months, some babies
can go 4 hours between feedings while some still need them every 3-3.5 hours. This will play a
factor in your schedule as well.
